When you go online researching calendula as flower essence, you may become confused. While there are many well-established uses for calendula as an herb, the flower essence is not yet well researched and many makers seem to follow the lead of the essence maker before them. You may come upon statements that calendula can help to tame fiery tempers and to help speakers communicate clearly, but frankly we have not found either of these to be the case.
Ava's research into calendula took her to the second chakra. Calendula flowers are soft, delicate, yet intensely fragrant and sticky. Calendula is a sun-dependent flower that is energetically sensitive and vulnerable. It closes in the evening as soon as the sun takes away its caressing rays. All this points to a personality that is fragile in love. It is someone who is afraid to lose themselves in love or afraid to show their shyest or most vulnerable side in sex. After researching this essence for a while, Ava came upon a Greek myth that seemed to confirm her findings. According to the story, a young maiden named Caltha fell in love with Apollo, the god of the sun. But then Caltha melted in Apollo's presence, from the power and heat of his sun rays, and in her place grew a calendula flower. This myth would point to the personality of calendula as being so fragile, fearful, paralyzed, and anxious around love and sex that she never gets to experience either of the human pleasures.
Troubled relationships, distance in personal relationships, lack of clarity regarding one's family or intimate relationships, anxiety in intimate moments, sexual anxiety; fear of intimacy, fear of becoming too soft, too yielding, too emotionally vulnerable in a love relationship, fear of falling apart if a love relationship should end, feeling inconsolable after the ending of a love relationship; Also, premenstrual tension, cramping, water retention, and other PMS symptoms; poor skin health, skin issues (scars, eczema, slow tissue healing); second chakra out of balance or weaker.
The Calthas of today will benefit from the calendula flower essence to give them more emotional resiliency and sturdiness, but this flower essence is for many more situations than just extreme fragility. Men and women who find themselves confused or inexplicably tangled in their love relationships will benefit from this essence. It is also particularly useful for the apparently strong, together, in-control, and often professionally successful individual who is at a loss about his or her love, spousal, or other intimate relationships.
The calendula essence is a quiet guide to help us recognize or understand our fears around taking any step forward in our intimate relationships. We may be afraid to show our weaknesses or fantasies, but by staying as we are, we are keeping the loved person at a distance. The calendula essence annihilates these fears and anxieties, giving us a chance for true intimacy, with our spouses, partners, and lovers, but also with our mothers, fathers, siblings, and close friends.
Calendula is renowned as a skin-healing and skin-beautifying herb, and herbalists and skin-care formulators find it useful for a wide range of skin concerns, including eczema, acne, cold sores, under-eye circles, scars, and dry skin. We recommend this flower essence for use as an herbal supplement for anyone who has problematic skin, whether or not the emotional indications for this essence apply. To benefit the skin, you may also mix a few drops at a time with your facial moisturizer or serum or add several drops to your bottle of toner or hydrosol.
Ava also recommends this essence for women with bothersome premenstrual complaints, such as exhaustion, water retention, cramping, sadness, and decreased motivation. Take the essence daily for a month or several, not just during the PMS time. You should be able to tell after the first month if the calendula essence is helping in your case.
