Goldenrod is an evocative wildflower with an eye-catching yellow-on-green color, even though it appears humble in its energetic message. Canada goldenrod is the species blooming in Washington in late July and early August. The plants grow in groups, favoring shaded and relatively moist forest patches, and all "rods" flower almost at the same time over the course of a week or two.
Feeling dejected, discouraged, lonely, or overwhelmed by challenges or workload; having a long-standing tendency to give up too soon; for those who are embarking on or in the midst of a difficult project, and for those who feel stuck and need to think out of the box to get to the next level in their work.
The goldenrod flower brings out the worker bee in us—the symbol of great work ethic; perseverance, whether the task is singular or repetitive; and a positive attitude toward work as something worthwhile, worthy of our focus and time, enriching, and anchoring for our energies. Goldenrod is ideal for those times when we have made up our mind to apply for a challenging school program, commit to a big contract, or set a challenging personal goal for ourselves, but then the going gets tough, distractions abound, or perhaps our faith in our abilities and talents begins to falter. The goldenrod flower essence helps us to remember our resources and believe in them, and helps us focus our energies on the task at hand and persevere through the duration of the project.
Goldenrod is not only for students and professionals embarking on intellectual challenges, however. It is also useful for athletes who want to strengthen their emotional and spiritual perseverance, as well as for children and adults who have not yet developed the habit of troubleshooting, overcoming obstacles, and focusing on what they can do, instead of on what they cannot.
