Flower and gem essences have the potential to offer great growth and healing for people of all ages, so it's perhaps no surprise that they can be equally helpful for our animal companions. If you have an animal that is struggling with an emotional imbalance, a consultation with an experienced herbalist to create a customized homeopathic treatment plan can be a safe, effective way to help.
For our clients in the Spokane, Washington area, our founder and herbalist Ava Zhan is thrilled to now be offering in-person consultations for horse owners. Consultations are available for horse clients located in Spokane, Spokane County, Colbert, and Deer Park.
During your horse's consultation, Ava will work with you to identify their unique concerns and to decide on the right combination of constitutional homeopathic remedies, essences, and other herbal support for their needs. Each consultation includes a customized essence blend in either tincture or aura mist form (see details below; if additional homeopathic remedies are recommended, these may be purchased separately.) Ava's focus during the consultation process is on identifying the ideal remedies for your horse's emotional and mental state to help with both new and longstanding emotional, physical, and mental predicaments.
Please note that Ava is not a veterinarian or veterinary technician, and this consultation is not a substitute for regular veterinary care. However, if you do have previous health records from your horse's veterinarian, sharing them with Ava at the time of your consultation can be very helpful in choosing the correct course of herbal treatment.
I'm pleased to share my experience working with Ava formulating flower essence blends for myself and my horse, Gem…I trust Ava with this approach completely. It was a pleasure to talk with her about my concerns, and it was easy to feel the effects of our healing relationship. [Gem] is a classic "difficult" horse, prone to anxiety and an "every man for himself" attitude when threatened. Despite many years of riding experience, learning to ride him correctly has been one of the greatest challenges of my life.... After my consultation with Ava, she made a blend for me and one for Gem. The first time I used Gem's essence on him (spraying the mist into his fur on particular areas he holds tension or where I felt he needed support), he sneezed twice and let out a big sigh. Horses are so good at finding ways to process things!
In the 6 months since we've been both using our essences, there've been some delightful results, both subtle and not-so-subtle. I'd say that generally our relationship is as strong as it's ever been. Gem greets me in the field and comes to my voice when I call him up from the paddock. I feel like I know better what he needs or what he's thinking. As an older horse, he may have off days here and there, and I'm so grateful for the component of my essence blend that's honed my ability to discern what could be bothering him. [We had] the opportunity to ride for a world-class clinician in November, and receive[d] some nice compliments. My riding has improved and we have a lovely canter more rides than not.
I think a horse or horse-human partnership could benefit greatly [from essences for] a horse that's recently retired or changed careers, a horse grieving the loss of a paddock mate or a change of living arrangement, a rider who struggles with persistent frustration or anxiety, or one who struggles to enjoy their time with their horse, a horse who is bored and unmotivated by their routine, a rider who feels guilty that they don't spend enough time with their horse, "mystery lamenesses" (in conjunction with other modalities), [or] a horse and rider who may be mismatched or trying to decide whether the match can work.
Purchase the package of your choice using the drop-down menu, and Ava will contact you via e-mail to set up a mutually convenient day and time to have the consultation. The consultation fee includes one in-person visit, including travel time to your farm or stables, as well as one customized essence blend tincture or aura mist. After the consultation, Ava will usually take one to three days to decide on your horse's blend.
During the consultation, Ava may also suggest herbal remedies or other homeopathic support to complement your animal's essence blend. While she is not a veterinarian and cannot offer medical advice or prescriptions, Ava has studied intensively with many top experts in herbal medicine, including mentorships with renowned homeopaths, Chinese acupuncturists, and Western herbalists, and has worked with a variety of animal species. She brings this experience to each and every consultation, allowing her to suggest just the right combination of herbal and dietary remedies to support and enhance the effects of your animal's essence blend.
You may choose to have your animal's essence blend prepared in a mist format or a tincture. We have found that the mist format is ideal for use with animals. Our aura mists are concentrated, unscented blends of flower and gem essences preserved by high-quality brandy, and come in a 3.4 fl oz (100 ml) bottle. If you prefer a tincture, our tincture bottles are 1 fl oz (30 ml) with a glass dropper.
Your animal's blend may be composed of flower and gem essences from our own Pacific Northwest essences prepared by Ava, or it may include essences we purchase from other well-established essence companies. The essence systems that Ava studied over a long period of time and uses in her practice are Alaskan Essences, Mushroom Essences, Hawaiian Essences, Perelandra Essences, Bloesem Remedies Netherlands, Australian Bush Flower Essences, Living Tree Orchid Essences, and Himalayan Essences. It is of tremendous benefit to a client to work with a practitioner versed in more than one system, as no one set of flowers from a particular region or maker addresses every condition or need. Ava has a gigantic repertory of essences (hundreds of essences) to choose from to address your pet's unique concerns and health conditions.
Because essences can work in very subtle ways, having regular follow-up sessions with your healer is the best way to evaluate your horse's progress, get a clearer picture of what may be changing—and what may not be changing just yet—and make wise choices about the best way forward. If you would like to schedule a follow-up consultation, simply select the "follow-up consultation" option from the drop-down menu above. Each follow-up visit will include an in-person consultation as well as a new customized essence blend.
You can always order a refill of your animal's custom blend by selecting the "refill" option from the drop-down menu when ordering. We keep records of each client's custom blends by date, so if someone purchases a refill, we will automatically make a refill of their latest custom blend. If you'd like to instead request a refill of a previous blend, just be sure to indicate the date of the blend in the order notes.

Please contact us at least 24 hours in advance if you need to cancel or reschedule your consultation. Missed appointments not canceled at least 24 hours in advance will incur a $50 cancellation fee.
If using a mist, shake the bottle and spray onto your pet's fur or skin or above their head at least once a day, or more often if desired. Request a pump closure if you would rather rub the blend into your animal's fur or the body parts where their health is affected—this is a method we highly recommend.
If you prefer a tincture, you can rub the blend into your animal's fur or the affected body part, and/or mix at least a half dropperful into their drinking water or food. Horses do well with two or three dropperfuls dispensed onto a sugar cube or sprinkled onto their grain or alfalfa or beet mush once a day.We highly recommend combining one internal method (adding the essence to water or food) and one external method (misting or rubbing into the fur) for maximum effectiveness.
Keep out of reach of children.
